Plasma Cutting Copper and Alloys

The plasma cutting of copper and copper alloys is the most common method of cutting these materials other than by mechanical means.

The high thermal conductivity of the material means however that must higher currents have to be used than for a similar thickness in steel. This can limit the effective cutting range of the machine to much less than it would normally be capable.

To aid cutting argon-helium mixtures are often used as these can aid energy transfer into the material assisting cutting.
