MIG Welding Copper and Alloys

MIG welding is a process frequently used for welding of copper and copper alloys due to the higher heat inputs which can be achieved. Although argon is often used on the thinnest sections it is the helium containing Alushield, which are most often used due to their ability to transfer more of the available heat into the weld. This is very important because of the high thermal conductivity of copper.

When welding brass problems can occur due to the volatilisation of zinc from the material and this can have health implications for the welder if proper PPE is not worn.
