Flame Texturing

Flame texturing is a process that alters the surface texture of stone or concrete by removing a small layer of material from the surface by rapidly heating it with a oxy-fuel flame.

Stone laid for walkways can become slippery and dangerous, especially in wet conditions. Removing the smooth layer from the surface to leave a roughened finish will give pedestrians a better grip on the pavement. Stone clad buildings are often flame textured, either completely or in strips to give a decorative effect.

Concrete in factories or car parks can become impregnated with oil and grease, which can become slippery. Flame texturing will burn off the oil as well as roughening the surface. This process is also used for preparing old concrete for a new layer of concrete or other finish by providing a clean roughened surface.

For small applications an adapted welding torch with a special texturing nozzle is used to direct the multi jet oxy-fuel flame onto the surface, but for larger applications machines are constructed which will texture a large area quickly.
