Lasers, light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, are equipment that converts energy from a power source into concentrated laser light which can be used for cutting, welding, drilling and a number of other processes. Lasers offer precision and programmability. The absence of tooling allows a CNC laser program to be modified quickly to accommodate changes in design.

Laser welding of metals produces an accurate weld with very small heat effected zone and little distortion. CO2 or Nd:YAG lasers can be used for welding using argon or helium as the assist gas.

Laser cutting carbon and stainless steels as well as non-ferrous metals is the most widely used CO2 laser process. CO2 lasers are normally used for cutting because high power output of up to 45 watts gives them the ability to cut metals 25mm thick.

Laser drilling can produce small, deep and accurate holes in many materials with Nd:YAG lasers. They deliver the laser beam through a fibre optic cable, allowing these lasers to be used on a robot.
