Metal cored wires are available to weld carbon, alloy and stainless steels, although the range is rather limited.

Metal cored wires differ from flux cored wires in that much lower levels of fluxing agents are contained within the wire, typically 10%, this means that a full slag cover over the surface of the weld is not possible. Because of this these wires are used for welding mostly in the flat and horizontal-vertical positions.

By removing fluxing agents from the core, this provides room for metal powder to be added. These additions can both improve the recovery rate of weld metal from the wire and provide a way that metal alloys can be added to the weld metal.
