Aluminium MIG Wire

There is a very wide range of aluminium alloys available but not all are considered weldable. Of the aluminum alloys considered as weldable not all grades are available.

There are three common types of aluminium MIG welding wire available, aluminium-magnesium, aluminium-silicon and pure aluminium. The choice of which consumable to use depends not only on the aluminium alloy being welded but on the in-service environment the weld is likely to be put under.

Aluminum MIG wires are notorious for giving feeding problems during welding. This is due to the soft ductile nature of the wire, especially the pure aluminium and aluminium-silicon grades. To counter this different feed rolls and torch liners are often used as well as specialist torches such as the 'spool-on-gun' and 'push-pull' systems.
