EquipmentFlashback Arrestors Flash back arrestors are essential safety devices and are the most effective way of preventing a flash back from reaching the regulator and the cylinder. Flash back arrestors should be used when oxygen and a fuel gas are mixed together to cause a flame, such as in oxygen cutting, gas welding or flame heating. A flash back consists of two main features, first is the flame front and second is a pressure wave, both of which can do considerable damaged if they are not arrested. A flash back arrestor utilises different techniques to prevent these problems occurring. Flash back arrestors are supplied for specific gases, such as oxygen, acetylene, propane or hydrogen, and are supplied to different sophistication, complex ones with pressure sensitive valves and reset buttons, to simpler ones which will reset after a flashback. Oxygen Flashback Arrestors Oxygen flashback arrestors are the most effective way of preventing a flash back from traveling up the hose and into the oxygen regulator and cylinder. A flashback comprises of two parts first the flame front and secondly a pressure wave, both of which as capable of causing considerable damage. Flashback arrestors are supplied for specific gases, including oxygen and are produced with different levels of sophistication, complex ones with pressure sensitive valves and reset buttons, to simpler ones that will reset after a flash back. Hoses The shielding gas hose is the hose which fits between the regulator or pipeline and the welding or cutting power source or wire feed unit. These hoses are constructed for relatively low pressure use, below 5 bar. Although often abused by the user these hoses are very important in ensuring the quality of the finished weld. Bad fittings, poor wear characteristics or poor material choice can lead to ingress of atmosphere into the carefully controlled shielding gas. This can result in serious defects being encountered in the weld such as porosity, surface oxidation and even a reduction in the mechanical properties. Making the right choice in hose material and maintaining them to the right standard is critical if production costs are not to escalate.
