Distortion

Distortion normally takes the form of a change in dimension of the component. It may show itself as transverse or longitudinal shrinkage, angular movement, or out of plane buckling.

Distortion may result in the component having an unacceptable appearance. It may be great enough to prevent the assembly of a several parts together. It may result in the component being unable to perform its intended function, such as the interference with moving parts.

To prevent distortion from happening it is important to understand what is likely to cause the problem. Simple errors such as welding two materials which different rates of thermal expansion, or laying down one long weld rather than utilising a sequenced welding procedure can result in distortion occurring.
