Joints and Welds

In order to design welded joints we have to know what we meant by the terms ' weld' and 'joint'. The two words are frequently used indiscriminately with one often being used when what we are describing is the other. This is further complicated in that many of the definitions for welded related terms also vary from country to country.

The definition most commonly used is that 'weld' refers to the basic type of weld being made, and 'joint' refers to the configuration of the components to be joined together.

While there are many different joint configurations that can be used to make a welded fabrication, there are only two basic weld types that can be made by arc welding, namely butt or fillet welds. To these two types of weld may be added lap welds, which are used most frequently in brazing, soldering and resistance welding.
